  Last days to apply for the Fellows BPC/GSUM

BPC/GSUM has two open positions for visiting fellows, one of which will be offered exclusively to South American citizens residing in the region. This year the program will take place from June 29th to July 29th. Those selected are expected to conduct research, teach, and debate on topics related to conflict resolution and mediation processes at BRICS Policy Center and GSUM Winter School.   BPC is among the selected by the announcement "BRICS NU" 

BRICS Policy Center, of the Institute of International Relations (IRI/PUC-Rio), is among the selected by the notice “BRICS Network University (BRICS NU), released by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and Capes. 12 proposals have been selected in the areas of Computer Science and Information Security; Ecology and Climate Change; Economics; Energy; BRICS Studies; and Water Management and Treatment of Pollution. All chosen are top rated programs, linked to institutions of higher education with programs recommended by Capes that have been rated a 6 or 7 in relation to the thematic areas of the notice. MEDIATING INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS: CHALLENGES and OPPORTUNITIES, BY JOSE PASCAL DA ROCHA - In this paper Pascal questions not only what makes a successful mediation, but also which methodological paths could enhance quantitative studies already put forth in the field. After he briefly delineates his choice of conceptual and theoretical language, the author analyzes four empirical cases – Guatemala (1996); Tajikistan (1997); the Democratic Republic of Congo (1999); and Sudan (2006). Besides exploring the historical context of each case, the pre-negotiation phase and the actual negotiations, the paper offers a few specific conclusions. Mediation is faced, above all, as an activity that demands creative and vigilant adaptability. Learn more

BRICS POLICY CENTER SUPERVISOR IS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN UNITED NATIONS ECOSOC DIALOGUES ECOSOC Bureau announced the establishment of an Independent Team of Advisors to support the second phase of the Dialogue on the longer-term positioning of the UN development system in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. "EMERGING POWERS AND CONFLICT AFFECTED STATES" - Paulo Esteves, general supervisor of the BRICS Policy Center, attended the meeting organized by George Mason University (USA), on march 14th and 15th 2016, which discussed the topic “Emerging Powers and Conflict Affected States”. Read more

"DEFINING, MEASURING AND REPORTING SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION: ACCOUNTING GRANTS, DEBT, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND IN-KIND SUPPORT BETWEEN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES" - On the 17-18 of December 2015, BPC were present in an event organized by Network of Southern Think Tanks (NeST) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The meeting was based on the discussions held at previous NeST workshops in Midrand and Johannesburg to build conceptual and methodological frameworks to measure South-South cooperation.  Read more

       Upcoming Events



Between 20 to 21 May, 2016, the first BRICS Education Conclave will bring together in New Delhi education officials, university representatives, educationist, consultants, policy makers, academia leaders and students to showcase the opportunities of cooperation in higher education among BRICS Countries.


On 24 to 26 May 2016, Lomonosov Moscow State University will host an international conference “Pressing Issues in Global Studies” on the development of the BRICS countries cooperation.


The second edition of the International Political Sociology (IPS) Winter School 2016, will be held from June 27th to July 8th. More information about the course and the opening of the application process coming soon!


The 3rd edition of GSUM
Winter School will happen between 11 to 21 July, 2016. The call for applications will be available soon.


The 8th BRICS Summit will take place in Goa, India, on the 15th and 16th of October.
